Help needed with CRONTAB on linux shared hosting. How do I access the CRONTAB?

I have a job that needs to run on a daily basis. My server is a shared hosting server which means I cannot see any files other than my own. I have various CGI scripts running within my own area of the server.
To edit the CRONTAB I need to know how to access it. Where is it? I do not have any tools available to activate a LINUX based command line or direct access to the cgi-bin.

Do I need a script? Access to the server? or just a plain miracle.

I have contacted my host and they keep sending instructions. But most assume a level of knowledge of LINUX beyond the realms of normal Windows people.

Please don’t copy and paste web pages that state ‘Access the crontab -e” – I think I have read them all and still do not know what on earth they are talking about when looking at my server/control panel.

The Expert answers:

Those crontab -e commands are things you should run from an ssh command prompt. Not all shared hosting gives access to ssh. If your control panel has no options for scheduling/crontab, then email your host and ask them for ssh login capabilities. Many will give that to you if you provide some ID (scan and email)…

Robert asks…

how can i find out if my yahoo web hosting plan is windows or linux server?

I am creating a website in the .net framework, but searching my control panel and all of yahoo help, I can’t find the answer.

The Expert answers:

It would be windows as it’s .net framework. Find out which control panel s/w is used by yahoo. It will give you a clue to access the control panel

Ruth asks…

What shared Linux web hosting service would you recommend beside GoDaddy?

I’ve bought the “Ultimate” shared Linux web hosting plan along with a few domain names from GoDaddy back in February, but since then I’ve had so many problems with them:

• FTP is incredibly slow at times (ex: can take up to 1 min. before it validates my login)

• Absolutely all of the operations done in the control panel are marked as “Pending” once started, until “something somewhere” executes the task (ex: MySQL database backups takes up to 6 hours to be executed, against 10s from phpMyAdmin)

• The response time for some of my hosted websites can can go as high as 15 seconds before it loads the welcoming page.

• Their support team takes me for a retarded noob, while I consider myself as an IT guy and I clearly know how to work up everything that’s in my control.

The reason why I choose GoDaddy is because I heard and read good reviews about it, and I also needed something that would allow me to register .CA domains and have web hosting in the same package/account.

I am kinda sick of them, just last night when I was trying to work on one of my websites, the domain would not load up at all, while the FTP server worked “properly”.

Can someone recommend me and/or share his/her experience with another shared Linux web hosting service in the same price range? (I paid $120 for 1-year Ultimate plan) I don’t care about the support team being dumb, in general all support teams are. Ideally, if it could also support .CA domain names it would be perfect, but it’s not a requirement.

I went on a few review sites, but they are all contradictory, and it’s evident that many reviews are biased or made by specific companies to make their competitors look bad.

The Expert answers:

Don’t choose godaddy because of http://www.nodaddy.com

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 4 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

You can reach reviews about this web hosting provider and its latest DISCOUNT COUPONS at:

Just about any hosting that costs more than $5 a month will offer you that.
But if they go offline all that will be useless and that’s the main point to consider.

The Expert answers:

Here are few Services you may consider:

Bluehost – Cheap, Reliable, Reputed.
Inmotionhosting- Honest, Reasonable Pricing, Great support.
Dreamhost- Affordable, Reputed

You may also look towards- Hostgator, Justhost, Hostmonster.

Among free Services: 000webhost is good.

For DDOS mitigation enabled: Gigenet, Staminus (both are expensive) Prolexic (extremely expensive).

Best Dedicated Server Hosting: Rackspace (of course expensive)

Choose according to your need and budget. Always read Terms of Service before registering. And better if you post a question regarding company of your choice at webhostingtalk. There are several experts out there.

Hope this Helps :)

In regards to web hosting for a small online UK business for Uk residents, how does EUKHost rate?

http://www.eukhost.com/vps-hosting.php

Im looking at the Linux L-VPS-02 option with a control panel option

The Expert answers:

Do you just want space for a web site or are you going to be running applications on the remote machine? (Generally that’s what VPS plans are used for)

If you’re just looking for web space then I’d suggest taking a look at http://www.centelia.net

The economy plan isn’t too bad, I use it myself to host a charitable organisation’s website.

Joseph asks…

I made a private server for a game called “jade dynasty” I have it on Redhat linux but its only a comand prompt that i use to host it from my house using VMware. I need to buy server hosting because there are hundreds of people on my server. Im only a kid and i dont really know about hosting and such from a dedicated server provider. The Expert answers:

The cpanel of dedicated servers is the same as shared hosting. Choose a dedicated server accept monthly payments.

Don’t choose godaddy because of http://www.nodaddy.com

My recommended service is:

http://www.goldpuma.com

Refer to their menu and :
WEB HOTING SERVICES >>> DEDICATED SERVERS
